Introduction: Prematurity, post-maturity, and significant deviations in birth weight are associated with significant morbidities and mortalities.

Aim: The aim of this study was to identify the cumulative incidence (CI) of premature, postmature, and term birth rates additionally to find out the prevalence of SGA, AGA, and LGA using INTERGROWTH-21 st fetal growth standards.

Methods: The study was part of the Vulnerable Newborn Study, approved by the Hamad Medical Corporation Institutional Review Board (IRB No MRC-01-21-277). The population for this analysis comprised of a 4-year retrospective cohort data (January 2016 to December 2019) for births conducted in all HMC hospitals. These government hospitals account for about 90% of all births in the country. We included 92431 live births with the required data in this analysis. The explanatory variables recorded were gestational age, gender, birth weight. We calculated the cumulative incidence of prematurity, SGA, AGA, and LGA (according to the intergrowth -21st standards) during the study period. GA was calculated by either the calculation from the last menstrual period or early obstetric ultrasound measurements.

Results: The percentage and the (CI) of Term, preterm, and post-term birth rate are presented in table1. Between 2016 and 2019, preterm birth affected 1 of every 10 infants born in Qatar, similar to the preterm birth rate in the USA in 2019 was 10.2%. The CI of SGA, AGA, and LGA is presented in table 2. 6.6% of our babies were born SGA. The birth rate of SGA, AGA, and LGA were very comparable to those reported from the European countries.

Table 1: Cumulative incidence of prematurity, term and post-term birth between 2016 to 2019 in Qatar (94568 live births 24 to 44 weeks gestation)
Cumulative Incidence Ratio Per 100 livebirths
Incidence of prematurity 0.0998 9.98
Incidence of Full Term 0.8992 89.92
Incidence of post maturity 0.0009199 0.0919
Incidence of stillbirth 0.007314 0.73142

Table 2: Cumulative incidence according to the weight of the baby
(InterGrowth-21st) n (%)
SGA (< 10th percentile) 4,880 6.6
AGA (10th to 90th percentile) 64,329 79.5
LGA (> 90th percentile) 11,513 14.0

Conclusion: The use of the Intergrowth 21st international charts for defining SGA and LGA at birth showed that the prevalence rates of both are comparable with many European countries.
