Objective: determination of changes in metabolic status and vitamin D concentrations in obese children.

Methods: We examined 160 children in the University Hospital (Minsk) from 2023 to 2024 yrs. Their anthropometric parameters (height, weight, body mass index (BMI)) were determined. Blood levels of vitamin D, insulin were determined. All children were divided into 2 groups: group 1 children with obesity (O) - 100 patients (58 boys(B)/42 girls(G)) (BMI 32.12±3.66 kg/m2, age 14.21±2.12 years); group 2 - the control group (C) consisted of 60 patients (B/G=30/30) with normal body weight (BMI 19.16±2.41 kg/m2, age 13.66±2.10 years).

Results: In boys and girls with obesity higher concentrations of insulin were detected relative to the control group (О (G 24.05 (11.61–24.55) µU/ml; р=0.0001; B 21.79 (12.75–25.40) µU/ml; р=0.0001;); С (G 8.35 (5.90–11.30) µU/ml; B 9.83 (7.90-11.40) µU/ml). Insulin resistance index level (HOMA-IR) in patients with О (G 4.14 (2.37–5.32); р=0.0001; B 4.31 (2.55–5.46); р=0.0001) was higher than in the control (G 1.60 (0.99–2.18); B 1.89 (1.53–2.30)). In patient of the study group a significant decrease in the level of vitamin D (G О 21.41 (12.49–24.56) vs 39.36 (32.00–45.94) ng/ml; р=0.0001; B О 22.01 (15.84–28.99) vs 36.12 (30.77–41.69) ng/ml; р=0.0001). In boys with obesity higher concentrations of OPG were detected relative to the control group (О 356.22±84.12 ng/ml vs 225.12±55.88 ng/ml (р=0.09)). In girls with obesity higher concentrations of OPG were detected relative to the control group (obesity 347.33±93.50 ng/ml vs 254.39±78.29 ng/ml (р=0.03)).

Conclusion: Children with obesity have a significant decrease in the concentration of vitamin D.
