Generalized lipodystrophy (GLD) is characterized by near total loss of subcutaneous fat, leading to low concentrations of leptin. Complications of GLD are heterogenous, including severe insulin resistance, diabetes, hypertriglyceridemia, pancreatitis, liver, kidney, and heart disease, and reproductive dysfunction.
