Following exclusion of specific medical disorders such as gigantism, tall stature is generally not considered a severe somatic problem. Orthopedic concerns such as scoliosis and kyphosis may occur. In addition, higher incidences of psychological strug gles, such as social anxiety, social withdrawal and less assertiveness, have been observed. Tall stature is associated with practical difficulties such as finding appropriate bedding, shoes and clothing. Activities of daily living such as walking through doorways and driving motor vehicles might prove challenging. On the other hand, taller individuals are prone to have a more positive personality with higher self-esteem, intelligence and ambition. Due to the real-world practical concerns, youth and their parents may seek interventions to limit growth. In this controversy session, the two speakers will present arguments for and against height restriction treatment.
