Introduction: Short stature is a common cause of consultation in the endocrinology department, It can be a sign of many affections or hereditary conditions. A clear and rapid diagnostic procedure is imperative for the improvement of height prognosis. The present study sought to evaluate the etiological profile of short stature in children

Patients and Methods: This is a retrospective study of 292 patients admitted for delayed growth at the Endocrinology, Diabetology, and Nutrition Department. Data were analyzed using SPSS V21.

Results: The mean chronological age at the time of diagnosis was at 10.6± 7.2 years, with a gender ratio M/F 1.4. The mean linear growth retardation was -4.2 ± 2 standard derivation. The mean bone age was 9 ± 3.8 years. The etiological profile was dominated by idiopathic growth delay (40 % of patients),16.4% carried the label of growth hormon deficiency (GHD) : 8.9% had total GH deficiency and 7.5% had partial GH deficiency, although syndromic growth failure was present in 19 %of cases. Other etiologies included delayed puberty (10.3%), chronic illness (9%), small for gestational age (7.5%), Turner syndrome (5.1%) and constitutional bone disease (2%).

Conclusion: The etiologic profile of growth failure is quite various, the most common being idiopathic growth delay, followed by endocrine causes and chronic systemic disease. Growth should be monitored systematically and regularly in all children. Early diagnosis of grwoth failure can detect serious affections and provide early treatment. Abdellaoui, W., et al.
