Childhood obesity has become a global pandemic in developed countries, leading to a host of medical conditions that contribute to increased morbidity 13.4% for girls. Here, we describe characteristics of obese children from 5 to 19 years old at the Vietnam National Children’s Hospital in 2023.

Methods: Cross sectional study in 437 obese children in 2023.

Results: The obese children accounted for 70.02% in the group of and premature death. Rates of obesity among children and adolescents in developed countries worldwide, collected in 2013, were 12.9% for boys and age from 5 – 10, 29,98% in the group of age from 10 – 19. The ratio of male and female children was 1.8:1. The average BIM Z-score was 3.00 +/- 1.02 and the average height Z-score was 0.58 +/- 1.14. 286 and 151 children had BMI Z-score from 2 to 3 SD and > 3SD, respectively. We found 29 obese children (6.4%) with Cushing syndrome, 218 obese children (49.9%) with acanthosis nigricans, 52 obese children (11.9%) with hypertension. The children with BMI Z-score >3 had more high risk of hypertension (20.53%). Some investigation abnormalities were found: Diabetes:1.2%; Pre-diabetes: 31.08%; Hypertriglyceridemia: 12.44%; Hypercholesterolemia (19.59%); Hypocalcemia (24.4%); Vitamin D deficiency: 51.4%; Hyperinsulinemia: 32.2%; Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD): 48.08%.
