ESPE2024 Symposia Improving treatment strategies in Obesity (3 abstracts)
University of Virginia School of Medicine, Charlottesville, USA
Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is increasingly being used to manage moderate to severe obesity in adolescents and young adults. In addition to being our most effective strategy at this time to reduce body weight, MBS results in significant improvement of many of the metabolic complications of obesity. This includes a rapid improvement in glycemic control in those with type 2 diabetes, and an improvement in lipid profile, liver function, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, polycystic ovary disease in females and gonadal function in males. In contrast to its many metabolic benefits, MBS has deleterious effects on bone health as indicated by studies using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry and high resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography. Finally, available data regarding the impact of MBS on neuropsychiatric outcomes in youth are conflicting. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the metabolic benefits of MBS, followed by a discussion of its skeletal and psychiatric impact.
