Effect of burosumab treatment on phosphate metabolism and bone health in patients with X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH). Preliminary data within an Italian sample.

Baroncelli Giampiero , Comberiati Pasquale , Rita Sessa Maria , Pelosini Caterina , Grandone Anna , Camodeca Rosanna , Emma Francesco

XLH is the commonest inherited form of rickets. Impaired regulation of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) due to PHEX gene mutation leads to reduced tubular reabsorption of phosphate (TmP/GFR) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D) synthesis with hypophosphatemia. Patients show rickets and osteomalacia, bone and muscular pain, stunted growth, and reduced quality of life. We report preliminary data on burosumab therapy in a selected sample of Italian patients.<p class="a...

Seasonal 25-hydroxy Vitamin D3 Variations in School-aged Children from Santiago de Chile

Poggi Helena , Dominguez Gonzalo , Monica Arancibia , Moore Rosario , D'Apremont Ivonne , Solari Sandra , Allende Fidel , Sifaqui Sofia , Garcia Hernan , Martinez-Aguayo Alejandro

Introduction: The main role of Vitamin D (VitD) is the regulation of calcium, which is also regulated by the parathyroid hormone (PTH), and phosphate metabolism. The main source of the more biologically active 25-hydroxy-Vitamin D3 (25OHVitD3) comes from the action of ultraviolet light on the skin.Aim: To determine if there are differences in concentrations of 25OHVitD3, calcium and PTH in school-aged children throughout...

Management of Insulin Resistance in Children

Chiarelli Francesco

Nowadays, after decades of continuously rising rates of paediatric obesity across the world, insulin resistance (IR) in children and adolescents has become a prominent health issue.Obesity is recognised to be the most prevalent pathological cause of IR. However, corticosteroids or growth hormone therapy, genetic diseases and physiological conditions, such as puberty and pregnancy, may affect insulin sensitivity (IS) lifelong.Early ...

Introduction: Italy was the first EU country to be affected by COVID-19 outbreak. The sudden change in everyday life was challenging for children and young people (CYP) who rely heavily on peer connections for emotional and social support. Concerns for consequences in CYP with type 1 diabetes (T1D) rose. Objectives: To compare the diabetes-specific health-related quality of life (D-HRQOL) of CYP with T1D and their parents...

Efficiency of The Genetic Study in the Assessment of Short Stature in Pediatrics

Murillo-Vallés Marta , Ros-Peña Andrea , Valls-Llussà Aina , Herrero-Espinet Javier

Introduction: Short stature is a common disorder in children that can become a challenge for clinical and molecular diagnosis. Recent studies in genetics and the implementation of Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) in growth disorders have demonstrated the great genetic heterogeneity of short stature and the existence of highly varied phenotypes. The absence of homogeneous clinical criteria for conducting studies makes it difficult to evaluate the efficacy of th...

Aisenberg Javier , Rosini Lynda , Haugh Jeanette , Mathus Susan , De Vito Michele , Brennan Ingrid , Ghanny Steven

Background: Educating patients and families on the management of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) has always been a challenge. Some endocrinologists educate patients and families with new onset Type 1 DM in the inpatient setting, while others have tried to do this process as an outpatient given the changes in the limits of inpatient coverage.
